Definite articles “Cien años de soledad”

In Spanish, nouns are so friendly that they don’t like to be alone, so they are often accompanied by articles 🤗.

Spanish articles indicate if a noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural, and if that noun is definite or indefinite.⁣⁣⁣

REMEMBER!!! A definite article ALWAYS has to match both the gender and the number of its noun.⁣⁣⁣

Now, we are going to show you some cases when you should use them, with great examples from Cien Años de Soledad, the magic novel of the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Let’s see:

We use definite articles…

🔸In reference to a specific noun: La casa nueva, blanca como una paloma, fue estrenada con un baile.⁣

🔸With abstract nouns, when we are talking about a concept in general: Pero la curiosidad pudo más que el temor.⁣

🔸Talking about people with titles: El coronel Aureliano Buendía.⁣

🔸Talking about substances: La leche hay que hervirla para mezclarla con el café.⁣

🔸Countable nouns when we are referring to all of them: Los habitantes de Macondo se encontraron de pronto perdidos en sus propias calles. ⁣

🔸Body parts, clothing, days of the week, time of day, sport teams: Meme le tomó la mano y se dejó llevar.⁣

It was easy, wasn’t it? 😉⁣
